The phase of sermon preparation that preachers find most excruciating and for which they find themselves least prepared is the one seminaries don’t teach and, many would say, cannot teach—the role of imagination. This article argues that the imagination is at work at every stage of sermon preparation and, later, try to sketch some of the specific operations of the imagination in preaching.
