Scripture has frequently played a role in American public life. From the Puritan efforts to create a biblical commonwealth to the fierce abolitionist slaveholder debates of the nineteenth century to the eloquent and urgent preaching of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Bible has been drawn upon as a resource for swaying and shaping the moral convictions of society. The story of the Bible’s role in our history is one still needing fuller examination.
