The discovery in the nineteenth century of the centrality of the Kingdom of God in the preaching of Jesus, a discovery that certainly was correct, seemed to have offered a fresh perspective on Christian ethics. Protestant ethics in particular gravitated toward this new-found ideal of the "Kingdom" because of its traditional commitment to formulating a scripturally based ethic.
