To the consternation of those of more socio-economic-political interpretive persuasion, and to the approbation of those inclined to favor the power of ideas, Niebuhr came to argue that it was not just the empirical conditions of human life but also (and especially) key ideas persisting down through the course of time that shaped the religious situation. Further, the idea that possessed the most significant trailing power, Niebuhr contended, was the Biblical motifóthe Kingdom of God.
