Toward the goal of increased student engagement, a former teacher brings her educational lens to confirmation practice. Eighty interviews with engaged adults result in five reported themes in how adults “learned their faith”: relationships, spaces for questioning and doubt, tapping experiences (encouragement toward a leadership role for which one feels unprepared), hands-on/active experiences, and unique identity of the teacher. This study follows three team teachers as they apply these themes to a large confirmation class and discover that their best teaching springs from their unique gifts for teaching.
