The gospels served to shape the identity of early Christian hearers. Preaching on the gospels provides opportunity today to shape congregational identity. It offers an occasion to address congregations as collective disciples—to preach in a way that seeks to aid in the formation and transformation of the congregation’s distinctive identity.
