The confusion about the meaning of godparenthood, the mixed messages as to its importance, and the resigned attitude of clergy can be found in similar forms and to varying degrees in all churches that have godparents at infant baptism. Before we can talk intelligently about where to go with godparenting, we need to understand the roots of our confusion in ecclesiastical and social history.
